Central Georgia EMC demonstrates skills at the Georgia Lineman’s Rodeo

Electric co-op line crews took some of the top spots in the 2017 Georgia Lineman’s Rodeo held Saturday, May 6, at the FFA Camp John Hope in Fort Valley.

On one of the prettiest days this season—in mild temperatures and under clear blue skies, professional journeyman teams, and apprentices with EMCs across the state, including Central Georgia EMC, competed with teams and apprentices from municipal electric systems across Georgia.

Now in its 23rd year, the Lineman’s Rodeo has grown in popularity with utilities and the public. The competition is a family-friendly event and gives linemen an opportunity to showcase their unique skills and the expertise required to restore power in a safe and timely manner.

“To coin a phrase, this is not their first rodeo,” noted John Harkness, VP of Distribution Services with Central Georgia EMC. “These men have performed these tasks hundreds of times, working in severe conditions. Today, they competed in perfect weather, but 99 percent of the time, they are restoring service following thunderstorms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, hurricanes, ice, and snow events. Today was a picnic compared with those conditions.”

This year, the EMCs showcased the skills of 86 apprentices and 33 teams in various events, including a written test, hurt man rescue, transformer change out, transformer relocate, and switch relocate.

In addition to Central Georgia EMC, linemen competed from Blue Ridge Mountain EMC in Young Harris, Carroll EMC in Carrollton, Cobb EMC in Marietta, Coweta-Fayette EMC in Palmetto, Flint Energies in Reynolds, GreyStone Power in Douglasville, Jackson EMC in Jefferson, Jefferson Energy in Wrens, Okefenoke REMC in Nahunta, Snapping Shoals EMC in Covington, Walton EMC in Monroe, and Washington EMC in Sandersville.

An awards banquet was held following the competition to recognize winners in each division as well as overall team winners. To learn more about the Georgia Lineman’s Rodeo, visit www.garodeo.com
