Central Georgia EMC sponsored two local students, Remiya Stephens of Macon and Makayla Davidson of Locust Grove, to attend the 2026 Washington Youth Tour in June. The weeklong leadership experience brought together more than 1,700 students from 44 states, including 112 delegates from Georgia, for an immersive look at our nation's history, government, and cooperative values. Sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and electric cooperatives across the country, the Washington Youth Tour helps students develop leadership skills while gaining a deeper understanding of civic engagement and public service.
During their time in Washington, D.C., delegates visited historic sites, including George Washington's Mount Vernon, the National Archives, the Smithsonian Institution, and several national memorials. The delegates also met with elected officials and learned how decisions made in the nation's capital affect local communities.
Beyond the landmarks and memorials, the tour provided opportunities for students to build friendships, exchange ideas, and engage with peers from across the country. Throughout the week, delegates were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, ask questions, and grow as leaders. The 2026 theme, Make Your Mark, challenged students to consider the impact they can have on their schools, communities, and future careers.
